Oaks talk titled, “Religion in Public Life.” I will conclude by talking about how these two talks help us define religious freedom and what our role is in protecting it. Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom is a statement about both freedom of conscience and the principle of separation of church and state. Thomas Jefferson had to deal with various challenges in his personal life and political career. This was because he saw the inequality in society and also saw that people acted differently in private than how they talked in public. Jefferson saw too many instances of how the imposition of religious values on government policy resulted in instances on occasion of blunt injustice.
