Boomers Parks Student Essay

The American History Essay Contest winners and their parents were guests of Dr. Silas Hamilton Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at the February 6 meeting at the Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville.

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service that was established by Congress in 1916.  The National Park service manages approximately 84.4 million acres of national parks.

For 2016-2017 topic students were to pretend they are writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 national parks.  They were to identify its location and discuss why and when it was established as a national park and what makes this park one of our national treasures.

The students read their essays for the members and guests.  They will receive medals and certificates at the Student Banquet March 13 at the Presbyterian Church.

Winners honored are eighth grade, Elizabeth Strebel, daughter of Kevin and Heather Strebel; seventh grade, Connor Berry, son of Christopher and Carol Berry; sixth grade, Stetson Isringhausen, son of Shaun and Andrea Isringhausen; fifth grade, Elisa Noble, daughter of Pete and Angie Noble.

The winners’ essays were sent to District V for judging and Stetson and Elizabeth have won District V and their essays have been sent on to be judged at the state level.  Elizabeth is a three-time District V winner.   Connor was the Illinois State winner last year.  All students attend St. Francis/Holy Ghost School.
