The Effects of Computers on Everyday Life

Computers have changed the way that the world works in many different ways. Some of these changes are positive and some of these changes have had negative effects on our lives. From an industrial standpoint most of these changes have been helpful to businesses and the economy. In the medical field computers have had an impact in many different areas, ranging from the way appointments are made to the carrying out of everyday tasks.

The biggest and easiest seen change that computers have had on today’s society can be seen in the workplace. Before computers became an office tool and were made available to the average employee, paperwork and sharing information in an office setting was done by many different individuals constantly filing and looking up figures. Now a computer can store large amounts of information that is readily available to virtually anyone with the click of a mouse button. One person can complete a job that in a time before computers would take many. Computers have made file cabinets and libraries almost obsolete. Businesses can share information nation or even world wide in a matter of seconds. For example, a word document file can be sent from an office in New York to an office in Los Angeles in under a minute, in the past this same information would have taken a week to be sent through the mail. Computers have changed the way that factories are run too. On an assembly line, before computers every job, no matter how easy or difficult, had to be done by an employee. Now, however, computers run machines and do most of these tasks.

Another big change that computers have made in our everyday lives is that with the internet we can now access information about just about anything, at any time, and we can do this from the comfort of our own home. Credit cards can be used to do on-line shopping at virtually any store. E-mail has changed the way that people communicate, it is usually free of charge and mail is sent and received in minutes. Devices such as video phones and web-cams make video conferencing possible. This allows people to see who they are talking to in “real-time” even if they are on opposite ends of the map.

Essay on A New Technological Revolution: Computers - Today we are witnessing a new revolution, very similar in the proportions to XIX Century Industrial Revolution (Mercury News, 2014, online) but probably with consequences as far-reaching as the revolution caused by printing during the Middle Ages (Rand, 2014, online). Living this revolution implies the need for knowledge of technologies that completely change paradigms known over time. Computer literacy is as necessary today as it was, and still is, classical literacy, reading and writing. Furthermore, computers have rapidly merged with information and has led to the phenomenon known as media/technological convergence (Olawuyi & Mgbole, 2012, p.1), where communication is obtained through a s...   [tags: media, internet, ilt]

With this technology, businesses can now save on travel costs and time.

There are many downsides that come along with all of these technological advances as well. In the work place computers have replaced people, even though it is faster and more cost effective to have computers do the work, many families have lost incomes when they were replaced by machines. With the internet being so large and unfiltered all kinds of illegal items are at anyone’s disposal. Items such as pornography, child pornography, and directions for building things such as bombs can all be accessed and this information can be potentially dangerous. Identity theft is also a big problem with the internet. Since there is no way of telling who is actually at the end of a computer credit card numbers and various other personal items can be found and used by someone other than intended.

Computers are used to do a variety of different things by physical therapists. In an office setting computers are used to keep records of billing information, client information, appointments and it can also be used to access information about different treatments. The machines and devices that are used by physical therapists often times use computers too. Many different types of exercise equipment now have computers built on the machine that monitor a client’s heart rate, blood pressure, and an estimated number of calories he/she has burned. These built in computers can also be used to control the settings of the device. Resistance, speed, length of time for an exercise and terrain simulations are all made possible by programs that are installed on the computer. Physical therapists also use computers to keep records of a client’s progress and possible future treatments. They use spreadsheets to keep track of how many times an exercise was performed, to what degree the injured area could perform without pain and other similar information. Computers can also be used to print out a daily regimen for the patient to perform, so that he/she can remember what they are supposed to be doing and when they are supposed to do it.

In conclusion, computers have changed almost everything in our lives ranging from how we complete tasks in the workplace to how we go about our daily lives. Some of the changes are for the better some are for the worse. No one knows what the future will bring as far as computers are concerned, all that we know is that things will not stay the same for long.
